Veer Catalog Sep 02

Veer's monthly catalog had a "concept" section intended to engage and inspire the creative community as well as showcase our photo, illustration and type collections. This month's concept was about creating a singular narrative from many fragments. We used the search terms from each image, highlighting key terms to create sentences. We wanted to mirror the creative process and celebrate a non-linear thought process. Who knows where it will lead.

Somos Images

In 2006, Veer, a provider of visual elements and design-related products, created Somos™ Hispanic Images. A new collection of royalty-free photography. Somos, meaning "We are" in Spanish, captures the subjects and faces of the contemporary Hispanic demographic and portrays the range of Latino culture today, from business to romance. I was responsible for developing the brand and worked with our writer in naming the collection. To launch the collection we created a brochure for the August issue. I also art directed a showreel for our sales team to promote the image collection.

The John Petropoulos Memorial Fund

Situation: In 2011, The John Petropoulos Memorial Fund (JPMF) approached Yeti Creative for help with a rebranding project. Part of the rebranding initiative included redesigning their website, which they felt was not doing a good job of showcasing the organizations safety inititatives and in particular, their safety videos.

Solution: A new logo and positioning statement I developed for the organization was used in the navigation bar. The website sections were simplified and renamed to make them more user friendly. The home page was upgraded with a multi-story player and mini newsfeed. The mission statement was moved to the home page so that users could more quickly understand the organization. I designed a new editorial grid and stylesheets to better showcase the safety videos and editorial content. I also incorporated commenting and sharing across the site to help get the organization’s safety message to the public. The site was launched in Fall 2011.

Besides the website, the new brand and tagline was added to all safety videos. A new workplace safety poster was created as well as a banner stand for public information events.

Veer Catalog Nov 05

The concept section for Veer's monthly catalog was meant to inspire and engage the creative community and get them to look at stock as an elemental piece in the design process and that it was their ideas that are the most important. This month's concept demonstrated the subjective nature of images and challenges the viewer to define each image.

Mulvey + Banani

A local engineering company was celebrating it's 30th anniversary and wanted to celebrate with a logo. It was engraved onto wine glasses as well as used in a video presentation at the anniversary party. The company also wanted me to design a t-shirt for all of their employees.

The following summer they also wanted to create some corporate branded Stampede items given it was the 100th Anniversary of the Calgary Stampede. They had decided to create custom cowboy shirts with matching stickers for various events and the artwork was also applied to desktop wallpapers and smart phone wallpapers for all of their employees.

University of Calgary: Faculty of Medicine

The University of Calgary's Faculty of Medicine needed a recruitment package showcasing their educational programs, research departments and facilities as one of the top medical destinations in Canada. The recruitment package consists of five program brochures, a 24 page research book and presentation folder.

corbis.com redesign

Problem: In the spring of 2009, the Corbis development team in Seattle was upgrading their web platform and needed a redesign of it’s home page and editorial templates. The redesign needed to be completed within 6 weeks. All work was done from the Calgary Veer office.

Challenges: The Seattle development team had already done user studies to establish a new navigation, UI elements and search process. The design team was brought in afterwards and asked to create new templates that needed to adhere to the existing design decisions from a search persepctive and not a marketing perspective. We needed to find a balance that gave the marketing teams a platform to showcase product while the development team needed a platform that made searching as easy as possible. Plus the two teams never met face to face and would need to work together in a short time line.

Solution: A new home page template was created that put more emphasis on showcasing Corbis’s amazing photography with a larger, single story with a multi-story player was allowing the marketing team to promote 3 stories every month. I worked with the development team on establishing stylesheets that looks harmonious with their new search engine while introducing a new editorial grid for all static pages to meet the marketing teams needs (product pages, photo libraries, offer, etc.). Once these templates were approved by the various business units, the Seattle team began production, putting all work to a staged environment so that the Calgary office could see the end results. The new site was launched in June 2009.

World of Creative Possibilities 2

This was our lead story for the relaunch of the ideas section. It’s a flash app that allows users to create artwork using a library of elements as well as drawing and painting tools. When the artwork is completed, users could save and publish their canvases where other users could view them and rate them.

City of Airdire Online Census App

The City of Airdrie had developed an online census app, and wanted to market the app other municipalities at an upcoming IT conference. We designed several tradeshow banners and info piece promoting the app and the importance of accurate census data.

ideas.veer.com

Problem: In early 2007, Veer brought together a team of developers and designers. Their task was to rebuild the “ideas” section which was hugely popular with its customer. Content included free wallpaper, a catalog archive and The Skinny, a blog designed in 2002 when the company was started. The primary goal of the redesign was to build affinity for the Veer brand by showcasing the creativity of the design community and the company’s product offerings.

Challenges: This section was created in 2002 and hadn’t been updated much since so there were many new features and web conventions to needed to be added. Also, the developers chose to work with a new programming language, Ruby. There was no existing platform for user profiles or user interaction, all the content had been static with moderated commenting so we were starting from scratch on building a UI and convention for our users.

Solution: As Creative Director, I managed the design process and worked with another designer on building the navigation and editorial grids. The grid was designed for a minimum of 1024 screen resolution and the new stylesheets made for a much friendlier read with larger images to

better showcase all the amazing artwork and photography. Profile pages allowed our customers to post portfolios and or creative content, add bio info and connect with other creatives. We also created a community-based blog that published all the users posts into one blog and was a nice companion to the already popular, The Skinny. Working side by side with developers was a great experience and created a strong appreciation for both perspectives.

Veer e-mail campaigns

Veer's weekly email newsletter was mainly used to promote products, merch and our current offers. We also created creative profiles for some of our popular type contributors as well as special events we were co-sponsoring.

Veer Design Pieces

This catalog focused on a single image library that was readily available at most stock photography shops. The concept was to remind customers that the images are just design pieces, and it is their ideas that count.
